Greetings from Kevin Lindsay, NCAH Board Chair

Thank you, climate-concerned citizens of Nanaimo — you (and your vote) make a difference!
A huge thank you to the citizens of the Electoral Districts of Nanaimo-Gabriola and Nanaimo-Lantzville who made our two All-Candidates Forums a huge success! More than 130 people attended the forums, with many of them indicating the climate crisis is their number one concern for this election
|
We’d also like to thank the candidates who participated! For Nanaimo-Gabriola, they were Sheila Malcolmson (NDP) and Shirley Lambrecht (BC Greens) and in Nanaimo-Lantzville, Lia Versaevel (BC Greens) and George Anderson (NDP). It should be noted that both of the Conservative Party candidates declined our invitation to participate in the forums.
|
Now, GET OUT AND VOTE! With a record number of British Columbians having taken advantage of advance voting, you may have already! FINAL VOTING DAY is Saturday, October 19th—just two days away! Use this Where to Vote Elections BC site if you don’t know where to vote.
In solidarity with you climate leaders,
Kevin

Seniors Demand Climate Action!
|
From Yellowknife to Vancouver Island and across to St. John’s Newfoundland, 73 Canadian communities participated in the Seniors’ Day of Action for Climate. Participants marched, danced, protested, and spoke out about the dire need for climate action in this country. In Nanaimo, Council of Canadians Mid-Island Chapter hosted a Rocking Chair Rally in front of our MLA and MP offices.
|
The message from Senior’s for Climate: “Let’s ACT NOW! – with our vote, our spending power, and our advocacy as part of a broad-based and deep-rooted movement – so that our kids and our grandkids inherit a better world. LATER IS TOO LATE!”
Check out the feisty Nanaimo participants and browse the Seniors for Climate Facebook page for heartwarming pictures of Canadian seniors, from across the country, “who want a better world free from destruction caused by burning fossil fuels.” The Nanaimo event is summarized in a great article by Lauryn Mackenzie from CHLY 101.7fm.

Climate Hope: Stories of Action in an Age of Global Crisis
A New Book by David Geselbracht
|
Climate change is a problem so enormous and complex—with threats so frightening in their implications—that many of us fend off confusion and hopelessness by simply turning away. There are jobs to do, children to raise, bills to pay. Meanwhile, with delayed action, missed targets and increasingly dire reports at the international level, a notion that the crisis is intractable continues to spread.
And the proposed solutions can be just as daunting. They often involve jargon about gigatons of carbon and kilowatt-hours of electricity. In a deeply polarized political environment, any sense of the common purpose required to make these work seems to dissolve into denial or paralysis. With all this fear and conflict, the question must be asked: How do we find the tools and—equally important—the hope we need to tackle such a wickedly difficult issue?is a new Text block. Change the text.
|
In Climate Hope, lawyer and journalist David Geselbracht blends in-depth research, expert interviews and on-the-ground reporting across Canada and in multiple countries, revealing remarkable efforts to identify the causes and impacts of climate change—and devise crucial ways to address them.
