School board environmental Stewardship action plan
We are supporting the Nanaimo Ladysmith School Board's proposed Environmental Stewardship Action Plan. If adopted, we believe this plan would set the stage for critically important improvements to our local school system and set a gold-standard example for districts across the province. To learn more about the plan, check out this recent radio interview with Dr. Jessica Stanley, chair of the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Advisory Committee.
Federal Election Candidate interviews
With Transition Nanaimo, we interviewed candidates for the September 2021 federal election on their party's climate plans. The interviews can be found on Transition Nanaimo's site!

Supporting City Council initiatives
These are some examples of the Nanaimo city council initives we have supported:
- Approval of funding for a Manager of Sustainability
- Adoption of the doughnut economics framework (Doughnut economics regards the performance of an economy by the extent to which the needs of the people are met without overshooting the Earth’s ecological means. Click here to learn more about doughnut economics)
- Approval of maximum funding for active transportation infrastructure. Proposed budget items included funding for improved pedestrian infrastructure and completion of the Albert. St. bike path connecting VIU with the downtown core
- Resolution to call on the BC government to follow through on the recommendations of the Old-Growth Strategic Review (Click here to see a Nanaimo Bulletin article on Old Growth)
VIU open letter
NCAH worked together with the VIU Eco Club to write a letter to Vancouver Island University asking them to take stronger action on climate change. This action resulted in the formation of the President's Task Force on Climate Action and Sustainability at VIU.
