SUBJECT: Meeting Request - Re Affordable Heat Pumps
Dear MLA ____________:
Heat pumps are an essential tool in the fight against climate change. Having a heat pump in your home can mean the difference between life and death during extreme temperatures. Yet too many British Columbians are unable to afford them.
During the heat dome in June of 2021, 619 people died of heat stress, most of them the elderly, poor, and marginalized. Making this life-saving equipment accessible to those on low incomes would fall within your mandate as our MLA.
The Nanaimo Climate Action Hub (NCAH), has initiated a province-wide campaign to ensure that heat pump installations will be affordable for everyone and we have joined the effort.
The first step in the campaign was to gather information on what getting a heat pump - or trying to - has been like for Nanaimo and area residents. With this in mind they sent out a survey and received 227 responses (a summary of the results is available here). The situation is no different here in ______________.
Our campaign team in ___________, consisting of ________, _________ and myself, would like to arrange a time to discuss this issue with you. We are keen to brief you on the obstacles to the installation of heat pumps in BC, and what we can do about eliminating them.
I will be in touch next week to see about setting up an appointment. I have attached a copy of the NCAH's report, and Seven Common Heat Pump Myths. You can find more information here.
Sincerely,
