What is a climate vote? You may be asking this question. Because climate change intersects with all aspects of our lives — from health (human and ecosystem), food security and energy affordability, to the very safety of our lives and homes — we need to know that our city government is taking action by voting to support effective climate policies. Local climate action and policy make a difference! According to the Canadian Federation of Municipalities, the decisions of governments in cities like Nanaimo influence roughly 50% of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions.
That’s why local climate action advocacy is so important, and why we’ve built this tool to help citizens understand how our city council has supported — or not supported — climate initiatives. This new tool makes it easy to evaluate climate decisions of the 2022-2026 term, but our hope is to provide quarterly updates on climate policy adoption on a go-forward basis.
